Executive committee of 5+5 defense initiative meets in Rabat
RABAT - The 14th meeting of the Executive Committee of the 5+5 defense opened on Monday in Rabat under Morocco's chairmanship.
The two day event brings together representatives of armed forces from the ten western Mediterranean countries which, besides Morocco, include Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania, Spain, France, Italy, Portugal and Malta.
The 5+5 defense initiative was developed in 2004 with the aim of fostering multilateral security cooperation in the west of the Mediterranean.
Cooperation between the ten countries focuses on four areas of activities related to maritime surveillance, aviation safety, protection of the civilian population in case of natural disasters, and training and research.
The fight against terrorism, illegal immigration, arm and drug trafficking, organized crime and the fight against pollution are among the priorities identified in action ptogrammes of this initiative.
