Winners of ‘Al Dhafra in the Eyes of Photographers’ Competition announced

Abu Dhabi – The Cultural Programs and Heritage Festivals Committee – Abu Dhabi announced the results of ‘Al Dhafra in the Eyes of Photographers’ competition, which was held in December 2013 as part of the activities of the 7th edition of Al Dhafra Festival in Madinat Zayed, Al Gharbia (The Western Region).

The photography competition is part of a strategy that aims at supporting the artistic and cultural movement in the United Arab Emirates, and preserving heritage through its documentation and presentation to the recipient by all means of modern technology. Through this effort, the Committee seeks to highlight the artistic aspect of the Emirati heritage, which reproduces a true picture of the Bedouin life mixed with desert sands.

Mr. Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Director of Projects Management at the Committee, noted that the Competition “draws its significance from the fact that it puts art in the service of a representation of the different aspects of the Bedouin life.”

“Al Dhafra in the Eyes of Photographers do give a genuine representation of the Bedouin life through a lasting snapshot that combines all life elements in Madinat Zayed,” he said.

Through attracting important names in the field of photography, the Competition has been able to convey a clear and true picture of the popular Emirati heritage, its tools and habits to the whole world.

Under the supervision of Mr. Bader Al Nomani, the members of the jury, Mr. Nasser Haji Malek, Mr. Suleiman Bin Eid Al Hamadi, and Ms. Rahma Khalfan Al Hadi, met to evaluate the participating photographs. The members jury looked at 370 photographs, and after the process of sorting and evaluation, they announced the following results:

• First position: Donell Gumiran / Photo D 35 entitled ‘Pasteur’
• Second position: Larry Layno / Photo D 33 entitled ‘Milking Camel 2’
• Third position: Rami Aladwan / Photo C 32 entitled ‘Love Story’
• Fourth position: Celso II Beringuel Creer / Photo A 34 entitled ‘Cultural Silhouettes of Al Dhafra’

The Competition, which is annually organised in cooperation with the Emirates Photography Competition, sets aside cash rewards for the winners of the four top positions: The winner of the first position collects AED 30,000, the second gets AED 20,000, the third receives AED 15,000, and the fourth position collects AED 10,000.

Like other competitions, a number of conditions were set for submission and participation in ‘Al Dhafra in the Eyes of Photographers’. Only photos taken at Al Dhafra Festival are accepted and photographers from around the world, both amateurs and professionals, can take part.

Participants must also declare that the ownership of the photo rights is full (including all the elements in the image and related creative ideas), and that it is not copied or combined with any works of others.

To ensure ideal credibility, the Competition’s conditions stipulate that participants must declare that the rights of the photographs submitted are not given, sold, licensed, suspended, or belonging to any other party which would prevent any free dealing with the photographs or the related rights.

The participants must declare that they have the approvals of all persons who are in the photo, for publication in books or other publications, or exhibitions. They must also authorise the Competition to use the photos for exhibitions by the Cultural Programs and Heritage Festivals Committee inside and outside the UAE. The Competition can reproduce the photos or re-authorize a third party to reproduce all of them, and distribute them in the media, but in keeping with the moral and material rights of the photographer.
