Sheikh Zayed Book Award names candidates for 'Literature' title
ABU DHABI - Following the announcement of longlists in six categories, the Abu Dhabi-based Award names fourteen candidates for the “Literature” title, selected from 245 nominations. The titles come from Egypt, UAE, Iraq, Morocco, Jordan, Lebanon, Algeria, Tunisia and Kuwait.
Seven collections of poems, six novels and one collection of short stories made it to the longlist.
Since November 2012, the judges’ work is in progress to evaluate the long listed books. The assessment results will be collectively evaluated by the Scientific Committee of the Award to produce a shortlist. The winners in the nine categories are scheduled for announcement in March.
The award comprises nine categories and the total monetary prize stands at seven million UAE Dirhams. Each prize consists of a gold medal bearing the SZBA logo, a certificate of merit and 750,000.00 Dirhams. The Cultural Personality of the Year winner receives a prize of one million Dirhams.
The foundation of the Award was laid out in memory of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, ruler of Abu Dhabi and President of UAE for more than 30 years, and his pioneering role in national unity and the country’s development. It is presented every year to outstanding Arab writers, intellectuals, publishers as well as young talents whose writings and translations of humanities have scholarly and objectively enriched Arab cultural, literary and social life.
The Sheikh Zayed Book award is an independent cultural award administered by Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA, Abu Dhabi), with a total monetary value of seven million Dirhams.
